Although RH degassers have been commonly lined with MgO-Cr_2O_3 bricks, environmental concern in recent years have motivated the study of chrome-free MgO-C bricks for that application. In order to prevent their oxidation and increase their strength, MgO-C bricks usually contain Al or Al alloys. When snorkels lined with such MgO-C bricks are repaired with castables, those metals may react with water and cause slaking of the bricks. In view of this, we devised a method and used it to evaluate the slaking resistance of MgO-C bricks for the snorkel application.
