內容簡介It is widely, if not universally accepted that glass product quality and/or packing rate will benefit from an improvement in the temperature homogeneity of the glass delivered to the bowl, mandrel, etc.. It is further recognised that in addition to the cooling required to reach forming temperature, there are only two further mechanisms which can be employed to modify glass temperature homogeneity, and these are thermal insulation and localised heat input. It is the purpose of this paper to explain the importance of thermally engineering the design of forehearth substructure refractory assemblies. The glass homogeneity benefits from effective superstructure insulation combined with appropriately designed burner and air-based cooling systems have been well documented, but the much greater potential for improvement through more sophisticated refractory substructure design has received little attention in recent years.
